About
About Thomas Gilbert
Writer. Songwriter. Photographer.
A Life in Words and Images
Thomas Gilbert grew up in California, and the state's landscapes — its coastlines, redwood forests, river valleys, and the long light of its afternoons — have been the constant backdrop and subject of his creative life. He has spent decades writing, making music, and photographing the world with the same quality of attention: unhurried, curious, open to what a place or a moment might reveal.
His work is rooted in memoir and personal essay, in the kind of writing that tries to be honest about what it means to move through time — to carry memory, to lose people and places, to find unexpected grace in ordinary things. He is drawn to the questions that don't resolve cleanly: about faith, about beauty, about what we owe to the past and what we're permitted to let go.
Writing
His memoir The Truest River traces a bicycle journey made in the summer of 1970, when a young man rode south along the California coast toward Big Sur and Carmel. It is a book about that particular moment in American life, about the landscape that shaped it, and about the long arc of meaning that a single journey can carry across a lifetime.
Beyond memoir, Thomas writes poetry and personal essays — shorter forms that allow him to attend closely to a single image, a memory, a question. His writing has always been in conversation with psychology and spirituality, with the inner life as much as the outer landscape.
Music
Under the name Tom Mark Gilbert, Thomas has written and recorded original songs for many years. His music shares the same sensibility as his writing: quiet, searching, shaped by the California landscape and by the questions that have occupied him throughout his creative life. The songs are not performances so much as conversations — with memory, with loss, with the possibility of grace.
He plays guitar and writes songs that tend toward the reflective and the lyrical, drawing on folk and Americana traditions while remaining distinctly personal. Several albums and recordings are available for listening and purchase.
Photography
Photography has been part of Thomas Gilbert's creative practice for as long as he can remember. He photographs landscapes, coastlines, rivers, and the quality of light in particular places at particular times — the same subjects that appear in his writing and music, seen now through a lens rather than a pen.
His photographs are not documentary so much as contemplative. He is interested in what a landscape holds, in the mood of a place, in the way light can make the familiar strange and the strange familiar. The California coast — Big Sur especially — appears again and again, as it does throughout all his work.
Psychology, Spirituality, and the Inner Life
Thomas Gilbert's background includes a deep engagement with psychology and spirituality — not as academic subjects but as lived practices, ways of attending to experience and making sense of it. These interests run through all his work, giving it a quality of interiority that distinguishes it from purely descriptive writing or songwriting.
He is interested in memory — how it shapes us, how it deceives us, how it can be a source of both grief and gratitude. He is interested in faith — not as certainty but as a way of remaining open to what cannot be fully known. And he is interested in beauty — in the capacity of a landscape, a song, or a well-made sentence to stop us in our tracks and remind us that we are alive.
Travel and the California Landscape
Travel has always been part of Thomas Gilbert's creative practice — not tourism but the kind of attentive wandering that opens the traveler to new ways of seeing. He has traveled widely, but California remains his deepest subject: its coast, its interior valleys, its redwood forests, the particular quality of its light and its silence.
Big Sur and Carmel hold a special place in his imagination and his work. He returns to them again and again — in memory, in writing, in photographs — as places where something essential about the California landscape and about his own inner life comes into focus.
Thomas Gilbert continues to write, compose, and photograph from his home in California. He welcomes correspondence from readers, listeners, and fellow travelers.
