Thomas Gilbert

Writing

Memoir, poetry, and essays from the California coast

Thomas Gilbert's writing is rooted in the California landscape and in the questions that landscape quietly insists upon — about memory, faith, loss, and the grace that surfaces in unexpected places. His work moves between memoir, poetry, and personal essay, each form a different way of attending to the same deep current.

The Truest River

A Memoir

Forthcoming

In the summer of 1970, a young man set out on a bicycle along the California coast, heading south toward Big Sur and Carmel. What began as a physical journey became something else entirely — a passage through landscape, solitude, and the particular quality of American life at that moment. The Truest River is the memoir of that journey and of everything it set in motion across a lifetime of writing, music, and photography.

"The road south from San Francisco was not yet the road I would come to know. It was still becoming itself, as I was still becoming myself — both of us moving toward the same coast, the same fog, the same long light over the water that I would spend the rest of my life trying to describe."

Selected Poems

Poems written over several decades, many rooted in the California landscape — its coastlines, rivers, and the quality of its light. Thomas Gilbert's poetry attends closely to the natural world and to the inner life, finding in both a common grammar of loss and grace.
