Big Sur, California coast

Photography

Landscapes, coastlines, and the quality of light

Photography has been part of Thomas Gilbert's creative practice for as long as he can remember. He photographs with the same unhurried attention that runs through his writing and music — interested not in the decisive moment so much as the contemplative one, the quality of light in a particular place at a particular time.

The California coast — Big Sur especially — appears again and again, as it does throughout all his work. So do the redwood forests, the river valleys, the golden hills of the interior, and the long Pacific light that makes everything it touches look like it is being seen for the first time.
